Board approves 2009-10 school year calendar

The Biloxi school board has approved the school calendar for the 2009-10 school year, with registration planned for July 21, the first day of school on Aug. 5 and the end of the school year on May 21, 2010.

The calendar has 180 school days in all.

Lady Indians finish second in South State

The Lady Indians track team finished in second place at the South State Track Meet over the weekend, with 10 members now advancing to the state meet in Pearl this weekend.

The Lady Indians were led by Tisa Smith, who finished the day with two first-place finishes, winning the 100 dash and setting a new personal best of 17 feet in the long jump.

Shannen Weyer finished first in the 3200 run and second in the 1600 run.

The Biloxi team, which previously claimed District and Regional titles, qualified 10 individuals for the state meet. Biloxi finished with 97 total points, second to only Brandon. A total of 16 teams competed.

Other individuals qualifying and advancing to the state meet: Camille Dunnings, shot and discus; Caitlyn Andrews, 1600 Run; Brooke Wilson, pole vault; Samantha Sanders, pole vault; Skyy Ray, 400 relay; Monique Ransom, 400 relay; Mariha Partman, 400 relay; and Tyana Owens, 400 relay.


Canaan up for PopStar Award

Isaiah Canaan, a member of the Biloxi High School state championship basketball team, has been nominated for the 2009 PopStar Award in boys basketball. The awards will be presented at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson.

Named in honor of 1981 National High School Athletic Director of the Year and longtime Jackson Public Schools athletic director, W.C. "Pop" Allen, the award honors the top three high school athletes in 23 sports categories. All male and female high school athletes in the state were eligible for the award, and Canaan is one of the three top nominees.

The awards ceremony will be at the museum on May 13. The $20 admission entitles you to a buffet supper starting at 5:00 p.m. followed by the ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Each of the top three athletes will be intorduced to the audience during a salute, and the number one athlete in each category will be presented the PopStar Award.
