“There are a number of noteworthy things regarding this year’s registration and school year,” said Dr. Paul A. Tisdale, superintendent of Biloxi Public Schools. “About 40 percent of our students will be attending a different school, with the sixth grade and ninth grade moving to new locations, and, of course, there’s the new $9 million wing at the high school to accommodate the ninth grade.”
New faces: Three schools will have new principals this year. Carl Fantroy is at Biloxi Junior High, Dr. Vera Robertson is at Michel 6th Grade, and Mrs. Ailene Balius is at Jeff Davis Elementary. Additionally, former Mississippi College and Midway (Texas) High School baseball coach Tom Gladney has been named Biloxi athletic director, following Henry "Spud" Wieniewitz, who retired this summer.
That special first day
Biloxi Public Schools offers late registration for those parents who are unable to make registration on July 21 or 22, says Superintendent Dr. Paul A. Tisdale, but “we want to strongly encourage parents to register their children on either of those days.”
The reason, Tisdale says, is so that the students will be able to attend the first day of school, which is Aug. 5 this year. As many as 5 percent of the students typically are ineligible for the first day of school because they register too late.
“A child’s first day of school is a very special milestone,” Tisdale said, “and we would like everybody here for that special day.”
Those who are unable to register on July 21 or 22 have until Friday, July 31 to register and still be able to attend the first day of school. Those who register after July 31 will not be able to attend school until Thursday, Aug. 6.
There are several reasons why late registrants can’t attend the first day of school. All involve time. School leaders must have sufficient time to pass along any medical issues to appropriate teachers. Teachers must have adequate time to ensure that necessary supplies – such as desks and books – are in place for students. And the district’s transportation department must have adequate time to manage bus schedules and bus capacities.
