Testing for Grades 2-8
(04/20)
May 1st (Reading), 2nd (Language) & 3rd (Math)
What is the Mississippi Curriculum Test? Student attendance is critical for state accreditation and
federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) purposes. Literally, one
child's absence can affect the district's state accreditation status and could
affect the "adequate yearly progress" results provision for NCLB.
School Board Meeting,
May 8
It is and has
been the policy of Biloxi Public Schools not to permit "charges" for
school meals.
Beginning
Monday, April 30, 2007, no student will be allowed to take a tray if he/she does
not have money to pay for the meal or has no money in his/her lunch account.
(USDA guidelines require a pay-as-you-go program.) Please make every effort to send money with your child, pre-pay, or fill out an
application if you feel that you qualify for the free and reduced lunch program.

Paul A. Tisdale, Superintendent (228) 374-1810
www.biloxischools.net
Biloxi Public Schools will re-open
for students on Monday, September 26.
v
New school
times are noted
below. As circumstances permit (student enrollment increases, construction of
temporary housing, traffic flow within the school district, re-opening of
Highway 90, repair of the Popp’s Ferry bridge, availability of properly licensed
bus drivers, etc.), the school day for some schools (Biloxi High School, Popp’s
Ferry Elementary School, Biloxi Junior High School, and Michel 7th
Grade School) may be increased.Parents
should take special note that students and staff attending Nichols Elementary
School will be
housed at Jeff Davis
Elementary School, 340 St. Mary Boulevard (behind McDonald’s Restaurant on Pass
Road, one block west of Keesler Air Force Base).
v
Parents
should take special note that students and staff attending Gorenflo Elementary
School will be
housed at Beauvoir Elementary School, 2003 Lawrence Avenue, between the railroad
tracks and Pass Road. Turn off Pass Road, by the Lutheran Church of the Good
Shepherd, south on Iris Street.
v
Nichols
Elementary and Gorenflo Elementary are not likely to be used for the remainder
of this school year because of the extensive water damage sustained during
Hurricane Katrina. These schools will be renovated and re-opened for school
year 2006-2007. These two elementary schools may open earlier if circumstances
permit.
v
Lunch and
breakfast will be served daily to students.
v
Efforts are
being made to secure after-school care at all elementary schools; there may be a
charge.
Ø
Questions
related to the re-opening of school should be directed to Dr. Tim Havard,

North Bay Elementary School (Guild Hardy Associates Architects, PA) has
been declared an Education Design Showcase Award Winner. School
Planning & Management and the Council of Educational
Facility Planners International (CEFPI) have developed the
Impact on Learning Awards to recognize educational facilities
that solve real-world problems with design, engineering and technology
solutions. (posted 8/2/02)
The Impact on Learning
Awards focus on specific solutions to design challenges - a cafeteria
design, for instance, that reduces noise levels; a commons area that is both
safe and inviting; a building designed to save energy and protect the
environment; furniture and equipment that enhance teaching; or classrooms
designed to accommodate technology.

Card, 2000-01
Mrs. Jennifer King, first grade teacher at Jeff
Davis Elementary School, has been recognized as a recipient of the Leo W.
Seal Teacher Recognition Awards. Five teachers from the coastal
counties are recognized annually by Hancock Bank for this honor and
selection is based on teaching and leadership skills in the classroom.

Summer School 2002 will be offered to students in
grades K - 8 who meet the following eligibility requirements:
(1) Students in grades K - 6 are eligible to participate if they have
a "C" average or below for the first semester and the third term on
their report card. (2) Students in grades 7 - 8 are eligible if they are
not promotable because they did not pass English and/or Math.
Invitations to participate in
summer school will go home with eligible students on April 29.
The invitations must be completed and returned no later than May 7.
Forms returned after May 7 will not be considered or accepted.
Summer School 2002, located at Jeff Davis Elementary School (behind
McDonald's Restaurant on Pass Road), will begin on June 19 and end on July
17; July 4 is a national holiday. Students who miss more than one
(1) day of summer school will be dropped from the program unless the
absences are covered by a note from the doctor/dentist.
Students who live more than one (1) mile from Jeff Davis Elementary School
will be provided bus transportation to and from school. Lunch will be
provided daily at no charge. There is no charge to attend summer
school.
This program focuses on reading instruction only in grades K - 6 using
Project Read, a multisensory reading strategy. Participation in Summer
School 2002 for students in grades K - 6 has absolutely no bearing on the
student's promotion to the next grade. The goal of the program is to
make the student a more effective reader.
Participation in Summer School 2002 for students in grades 7 - 8 will have a
bearing on their promotion or non-promotion to the next grade. Last
year more than 20 students were promoted to the next grade because they
mastered skills necessary for promotion to the next grade.
Summer School will not be available for students in grade 9 - 12 this
summer. Students in these grades should check with neighboring school
districts about summer school opportunities.
Summer School 2002 is funded by the Biloxi Public Schools and the City of
Biloxi. (posted 04/11/02)
